Various Types of Door for Commercial Property

March 14, 2017

When it comes to your business, you want to provide your property with protection and security above and beyond what you’d provide for your home. This difference is due to the fact that while your home and its contents are important to you, and the security of your family is paramount, your home is less likely to be invaded than a place of business. Moreover, your home’s doors experience significantly less use, and in turn, wear and tear, than those on a business.

Businesses, on the other hand, are susceptible to burglary and other property damage. In fact, it’s estimated that more than one-third of businesses will be invaded during their lifetime. Moreover, businesses experience door traffic to a level not experienced by residences. The doors on your commercial property must consequently be strong enough to withstand attempted break-ins and durable enough to take the constant opening and closing (with typically less than gentle treatment) that accompanies clients and vendors visiting your property.

Various Types of Door for Commercial Property

Commercial doors are made from wood, fibreglass, aluminum with glass or steel. Let’s look at the strength and durability of each material.

Wood

Wood doors offer a timeless, classic aesthetic, but true wood doors warp when exposed to the elements. The wood doors found in commercial spaces are usually internal doors and are made not from solid wood, but rather from wood veneer that is covering particle board! This material is consequently ill-suited to providing security, and are instead for providing privacy and dividing up the given space.

Fibreglass

Fibreglass is one of the most durable, low-maintenance materials on the market, and consequently also one of the most expensive. However, commercial property owners do make back some of the upfront cost by saving on maintenance, repair and replacement costs. The material isn’t pretty, which may be why so many schools- who love the durability of fibreglass- are lacking in aesthetic appeal. But for enduring strength without chipping, rotting or fading, fibreglass is an excellent choice.

Aluminum with Glass

For businesses seeking a more glamorous, welcoming look, the decorative appeal of aluminum and glass doors can’t be beat. But how strong are these materials? Thankfully, aluminum designs are not only strong and secure, they’re resistant to moisture and rust. That means aluminum with glass doors will not rot, warp or otherwise break down when exposed to the elements. Aluminum doors with glass are also strong yet lightweight, which makes their installation easy and cost-effective.

Steel

Steel doors are the default choice for factories, warehouses and other industrial settings. Steel doors are sometimes referred to as hollow, but are actually made of steel wrapped around a resin or foam core or around steel stiffeners. Steel doors provide the highest level of security of any door material, while also being both affordable and tough. Steel doors are virtually impenetrable and are highly durable, being resistant to cracking, decay and the elements. Moreover, only steel doors can take the abuse that comes with exposure to forklifts and other equipment that could otherwise do serious damage.
