How to Choose Sliding Doors for Your Deck

September 6, 2016

What to choose? What to choose? Having renovations done to your house or building a new home is fraught with decision making at every single turn. Do we go timber floor boards or tiled floors? Do we go curtains or shutters for the windows? And – do we go sliding doors or bifolds for the exit through to the deck?

If you’ve got past that first hurdle with choosing what sort of doors you want coming out onto your deck, then you’ve almost finished the race – and can get onto the next decision to make! But before you do, you’ll have to mark off a few more things on your checklist for your sliding doors.

To make it easy for you, we’ve listed them out here. So have a browse, have a think, and most of all enjoy yourself!

What material should they be made out of?

There are many different choices that you can decide from when it comes to the material of your sliding doors. Here are the types of material that can be used in any door:

  • Timber
  • Steel
  • Aluminium
  • Fibreglass
  • Vinyl
  • Glass

When it comes to sliding doors, the standard in Australia is aluminium. They have been the most popular choice around the country for decades due to their durability, flexibility and style. Because they have a minimal footprint, giving way to more glass, and come in a huge variety of colours, they’re hard to go past.

What kind of glass do you need?

It’s important that you get the right type of glass for your doors so that you can trust the quality and help to block out the outside environment. The right glass will let in a generous amount of light while at the same time reduce the heat allowed in from the summer sun. It will also prevent the heat from escaping your home in the winter! It will keep UV and noise out, too.

The glass itself must conform with the Building Code of Australia regulations. A provider such as Viridian Glass will tick all the boxes.

From there, you will need to choose the glazing finish of your glass. This may be single glazing, the most popular choice, double glazing, for extra protection from the elements, and thermal glazing, which is specially designed to have an insulation effect.

What configuration do you need?

Are you going to need just one sliding door panel? Two sliding doors sliding out to opposite positions? Double panels opening out on either side to really open the place up? Depending on how much space you have, and how much you’d like your indoor area and your deck to fuse will guide you in determining the right configuration for your doors.
